# Delete duplicate photos on Android, on the phone and in Google Photos

> Android duplicates sit in two places: the phone's storage and your Google Photos library. Try Files by Google and Samsung Gallery first, then clear both layers.

Updated November 8, 2026 · https://doppelgone.app/guides/delete-duplicate-photos-android

To delete duplicate photos on Android, clear two separate places. The first is the photos stored on the phone: camera shots, WhatsApp and download folders. The second is your Google Photos library in the cloud. Files by Google and Samsung Gallery can both find duplicate files on the phone for free, and Google Photos has no duplicate finder of its own. Doppelgone's Android app cleans the phone, and its Chrome extension cleans the Google Photos library.

## Why there are two layers

A photo can exist as a file on your phone, as a backed-up copy in Google Photos, or both. A duplicate can appear in either place. Two saves of the same chat picture sit in the phone's folders. A re-upload or an old backup adds a second copy to the cloud. Deleting in one place doesn't tidy the other, so decide which layer is crowded before you start. If your problem is a full Google account rather than a full phone, read [Google Photos storage full on Android and Pixel](https://doppelgone.app/guides/google-photos-storage-full-android-pixel).

## Layer 1: photos stored on the phone

### Files by Google (free)

Google's help page for Files by Google describes a duplicate clean-up:

1. Open Files by Google.
2. Tap the menu, then Clean.
3. On the Duplicate files card, tap Select files.
4. Choose the copies to remove. One copy in each set carries an "Original" badge, and Google says to keep it.
5. Move the selected files to Trash and confirm.

Google's page doesn't say how it decides two files are duplicates, so look at each set before you confirm. It works on files, not on photo quality: it won't pick the sharpest of three similar shots.

### Samsung Gallery (free, Galaxy phones)

Samsung's support page for the Gallery app describes a Clean out option:

1. Open Gallery and tap Menu.
2. Tap Clean out, then Delete duplicate pictures.
3. Tap Delete duplicates. Samsung says this removes the duplicates and saves the originals.
4. Tap Delete, then Move to Trash to confirm.

Samsung notes that if you have no duplicate images, the option may not appear, and that screens vary by software version and model. On newer devices, Gallery can also group similar-looking pictures. That is a view setting, and the page describes how to turn it off with Ungroup similar images.

### What the built-in tools miss

Both tools handle copies of the same file. Neither is described as choosing the best of a burst or a set of retakes. That is where most phone clutter comes from: ten near-identical shots, with one worth keeping.

### Doppelgone for Android

Doppelgone's Android app (Android 11 or newer, from [Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.doppelgone.mobile)) cleans the photos stored on the phone: camera bursts, pictures saved from chats, downloads, and the copies in your albums. It finds exact duplicates, similar shots and bursts, keeps the best shot of each set (eyes open, sharp, well lit) and says why. Photos are analysed on the phone. Your photos never leave your device.

Android asks you to allow the move first. Removed photos go to the phone's Trash for 30 days, and Undo puts a whole clean-up back in one tap. Favourites and videos are never touched. For WhatsApp copies specifically, fix the cause first with [WhatsApp photos saved twice](https://doppelgone.app/guides/whatsapp-duplicate-photos).

## Layer 2: the Google Photos library

Google's own help describes nothing that finds duplicates in Google Photos. What it does have is Photo stacks.

### Photo stacks

Google defines similar photos as "nearly identical photos of the same subject that were taken together within a short time frame". Stacks group them and show a top pick as the cover. Google says stacking "doesn't change your available storage", and that stacks only cover backed-up photos. The Keep this, delete rest option lets you keep one photo and delete the others, one stack at a time.

### What deleting does to the backup

Google's page on deleting photos says that if a photo is backed up and you delete it in the Google Photos app, the same content is deleted on all devices with backup turned on. It stays in the Google Photos trash for 30 days, then is permanently deleted. Google also offers Free up space on this device, which removes device copies of backed-up photos. Google says the copies stay in your Google Photos library.

Google's pages don't cover what a third-party app does to the cloud copy, so this guide makes no claim about it. Check the Google Photos app after any clean-up.

### Doppelgone's Chrome extension

For the cloud library, use the [Chrome extension](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/pabeloccfbcecmhfagdjmdiekfcfadgb) on a computer at photos.google.com. It analyses the library in the browser, on your own computer. Removed photos wait in the Google Photos trash for 30 days, with one-click Undo. Favourites, videos, motion photos and photos shared with you are never touched. Steps are in [how to delete duplicate photos in Google Photos](https://doppelgone.app/guides/delete-duplicate-photos-google-photos). On a Chromebook, see [Google Photos duplicates on a Chromebook](https://doppelgone.app/guides/google-photos-duplicates-chromebook).

## Which layer to clean first

1. Run Files by Google or Samsung Gallery for exact copies on the phone.
2. Run the Android app for bursts and lookalikes.
3. Do the library on a computer with the extension.

Free covers unlimited scans and 200 clean-ups. [Pro](https://doppelgone.app/pricing) is one payment of $9.99 for unlimited clean-ups on up to 3 libraries, with no subscription. The Android purchase is the same Pro licence.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I delete duplicate photos on Android for free?

Use Files by Google (Clean, then Duplicate files) or, on a Galaxy phone, Samsung Gallery (Menu, Clean out, Delete duplicate pictures). Both move the copies to Trash, and both are free. Review each set first.

### Does Google Photos have a duplicate finder?

Google's help pages don't describe one. Photo stacks group nearly identical shots taken close together, but Google says stacking doesn't change your available storage.

### If I delete a photo on my phone, is it removed from Google Photos?

It depends on where you delete it. Google says that deleting a backed-up photo in the Google Photos app removes it from all devices with backup turned on. Its Free up space tool removes only the device copy.

### Can Doppelgone clean my Google Photos from my phone?

No. The Android app cleans photos stored on the phone only. Use the Chrome extension on a computer for the Google Photos library.

### Does it clean duplicate videos?

No. Videos aren't part of Doppelgone clean-ups, so clear duplicate videos by hand.
