Find duplicate photos on Windows 11: folders, drives and OneDrive
Updated November 8, 2026 · 5 min read
To find duplicate photos on Windows 11, you can sort and search in File Explorer by hand, or use a duplicate finder. Microsoft's help pages don't describe a duplicate finder in the Photos app. Free tools such as dupeGuru cover folders, and paid ones such as Cisdem add more options. Doppelgone's Windows app scans the folders and drives you pick, and skips files that exist only in OneDrive, so nothing is downloaded.
What Windows gives you
The Photos app
Microsoft's guide to organising photos in Windows 11 covers folders, tags, dates and OneDrive. It doesn't mention duplicates. Microsoft's help pages don't document a duplicate feature in the app today, so don't count on one.
Microsoft PC Manager
PC Manager is Microsoft's free utility. Its own page lists storage tools: "Give your PC a spring cleaning and manage large files," and Storage Sense. It doesn't describe a duplicate photo finder, so treat it as a general clean-up tool.
File Explorer, by hand
This works for small folders:
- Open the folder, switch to Details view and sort by Size. Microsoft's help describes right-clicking empty space, then Sort by, then Size.
- Use Search options to narrow by kind (picture) or size.
- Look for names with a number added, such as "photo (1).jpg", and compare the pair.
- Delete the extra and check the Recycle Bin before you empty it.
By hand, you only catch copies with the same name and size. Lookalikes and bursts need a tool.
OneDrive and online-only files
If your Pictures folder syncs with OneDrive, many files may not be on the PC at all. Microsoft's Files On-Demand page says a blue cloud icon marks a file that is only available online, and that online-only files don't take up space on your computer. When you open one, it downloads and becomes a locally available file. Files marked "Always keep on this device" take up space on the PC.
Two things follow:
- A scanner can pull your whole OneDrive down. Because opening an online-only file downloads it, a tool that opens every file may start downloading your whole OneDrive. Doppelgone's Windows app skips files that are only in OneDrive, so nothing is downloaded. The cost is that online-only duplicates aren't found.
- Deleting is not local. Microsoft says that deleting an online-only file from your device deletes it from your OneDrive on all devices and online. Check before you remove anything from a OneDrive folder.
To have OneDrive photos checked, make them available on the PC first. That uses disk space, so do it folder by folder.
Tools that find duplicate photos on Windows
These facts come from each maker's own pages, read on 8 Nov 2026.
- dupeGuru: Free, open source (GPL-3.0), for Windows, macOS and Linux. It has a Picture mode that scans pictures "fuzzily". The latest release is 4.3.1 from 9 July 2022, and the README asks for more maintainers.
- Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro: From Systweak, for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. It scans local and external storage, and also Dropbox, Picasa and Lightroom. The trial removes 15 photos. Windows is a one-year licence billed annually, with a 60-day refund.
- Cisdem Duplicate Finder: For Windows. On its US-dollar buy page, one PC costs $19.99 for a year or $39.99 one-time, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- 4DDiG Duplicate File Deleter: Windows. It scans local, external, USB, SD and network storage, and lists Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox as cloud drives it can scan (Windows only). Removing 15 duplicates is free. For one PC: $24.95 a month, $39.95 a year or $59.95 lifetime, tax excluded.
Check how any tool treats OneDrive-only files before you scan, and review every set before you delete.
Doppelgone for Windows
Doppelgone's Windows app runs on Windows 10 and 11 and comes from the Microsoft Store.
- Open the app and pick the folders and drives that hold photos: camera imports, old phone backups, the Pictures folder or an external drive.
- It scans on the PC itself, iPhone HEIC files included. Your photos never leave your device.
- It finds exact duplicates, similar shots and burst photos. In each set it keeps the best shot (eyes open, sharp, well lit) and says why.
- You approve every clean-up. Removed photos move to a Removed folder next to your photos, then to the Recycle Bin after 30 days. Undo is one click.
Free covers unlimited scans and 200 clean-ups. Pro is one payment of $9.99 for unlimited clean-ups on up to 3 libraries, with no subscription. Videos aren't part of clean-ups.
The Windows app doesn't reach Google Photos or icloud.com in the cloud. For iCloud photos, see delete duplicate iCloud photos from a Windows PC. Get the app from the download page.
Frequently asked questions
Does Windows 11 have a built-in duplicate photo finder?
Microsoft's help pages don't describe one in the Photos app or in File Explorer. You can sort and search by hand, or use a tool such as dupeGuru or Doppelgone.
What is a OneDrive online-only file?
Microsoft says it's a file shown with a blue cloud icon that is only available online. It takes no space on your PC and downloads when you open it.
Will a duplicate scanner download my whole OneDrive?
Not Doppelgone's Windows app, which skips files that are only in OneDrive. For any other tool, check how it handles online-only files first.
Is dupeGuru safe to use for photos?
It's free and open source, and its Picture mode scans pictures fuzzily. Its latest release is from July 2022, so check that it runs on your PC and review every set.
