WhatsApp photos saved twice? Stop the copies and clear them
Updated November 8, 2026 · 4 min read
WhatsApp photos usually show up twice because the same picture reaches your library by more than one route. WhatsApp can save what you receive into your phone's gallery or camera roll on its own, and a photo you also saved by hand, or that someone sends you again, becomes a second copy. On Android, Google Photos can then back up the WhatsApp folder as well. The fix has two halves: change the WhatsApp and backup settings so new copies stop arriving, then clear the copies you already have. Doing it in that order means you only clean up once.
Step 1: Stop WhatsApp saving every photo
WhatsApp's own help centre says it saves the audio, video and photos sent to your phone automatically. You can turn that off for everything, or for single chats.
On Android
- For all chats: open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, go to Settings, then Chats, and turn off Media visibility. That stops WhatsApp saving new photos and videos to your phone.
- For one chat or group: open the chat, tap the contact or group name, tap Media visibility, choose No and confirm with OK. Noisy family and work groups are the best ones to switch off.
WhatsApp notes that changing the main setting won't undo choices you already made for specific chats, so check the busy chats too.
On iPhone
- Per chat: open the chat, tap the contact or group name, and change Save to Camera Roll to Default, Always or Never. Never means nothing from that chat is saved.
- For everything: WhatsApp's help page points to Settings, then Chats, then Save to Camera Roll for the app-wide choice.
Step 2: Check what Google Photos backs up (Android)
Google's help page says that on Android, Back up device folders lets you back up photos and videos from other apps, including WhatsApp.
- In the Google Photos app, tap your profile picture.
- Tap Photos settings, then Backup.
- Under Settings, tap Back up device folders.
- Turn the WhatsApp folders on or off.
If you want every WhatsApp photo in Google Photos, leave the folder on and switch off Media visibility only for chats you don't care about. If you'd rather keep only the photos you pick, turn the folder off. Either way, pick one route.
Step 3: Clear the copies you already have
Settings only stop new copies. The old ones need clearing, and it's worth reviewing each set before you delete anything.
By hand
- In Google Photos (photos.google.com on a computer is easiest), search for a chat name or scroll to a month where you were in busy groups.
- Compare near-identical photos side by side and move the extra to the trash.
- On iPhone (iOS 16 or later), open Photos, tap Collections, scroll down to Utilities and tap Duplicates, then merge each set. Apple keeps the copy with the highest quality and moves the others to Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days.
Apple's help describes the album as finding duplicate photos and videos. It doesn't describe picking the best of several similar shots, such as a burst.
With Doppelgone
Doppelgone finds exact copies, lookalikes and burst shots, keeps the best shot of each set (eyes open, sharp, well lit) and says why. You approve every clean-up. It works in the place your photos live:
- Google Photos: the Chrome extension on a computer.
- iCloud Photos: the Chrome extension at icloud.com, or the iPhone app.
- Photos saved on an Android phone: the Android app. Cleaning the phone and cleaning your Google Photos library are separate jobs.
Photos never leave your device: they're analysed on your computer or phone. Removed photos wait for 30 days in the service's own trash (the Google Photos trash, iCloud Recently Deleted, or the phone's Trash), with one-click undo. Favourites, videos and photos shared with you are never touched, so WhatsApp videos need checking by hand. Get the apps from the download page.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my WhatsApp photos in my gallery twice?
Most often because one copy was saved automatically and another arrived another way: you saved it by hand, the sender sent it again, or it was forwarded through another chat. WhatsApp says it saves received media to your phone by default, so every route adds a copy.
Will turning off Media visibility delete my existing photos?
No. It only stops new media being saved to your gallery. Photos already saved stay where they are, so you still need to clear old copies.
Can I stop it for one noisy group only?
Yes. On Android, open the chat info and set Media visibility to No. On iPhone, set Save to Camera Roll to Never for that chat.
Does Google Photos back up my WhatsApp photos?
On Android, it can. Google says Back up device folders covers photos and videos from other apps such as WhatsApp. You choose which folders to turn on.
Does Doppelgone clean WhatsApp videos?
No. Videos are never touched, so clear duplicate videos by hand.
