Delete duplicate photos on iPhone: the Duplicates album and what it misses
Updated November 8, 2026 · 6 min read
The quickest free way to delete duplicate photos on an iPhone is the Duplicates album in the Photos app. Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Utilities and tap Duplicates, then merge each set. It needs iOS 16 or later. The album deals with duplicates, and Apple's help doesn't describe it choosing between similar shots, so retakes and burst frames usually need a separate pass. For those you can use Apple's burst tools by hand, or an app that groups similar photos for you.
Step 1: Use the Duplicates album
Apple says that starting with iOS 16, the Photos app detects duplicate photos and videos in your library and places them in the Duplicates album under Utilities. Nothing to install.
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap Collections, then scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Duplicates.
- Tap Merge to combine a set of duplicates, then tap Merge again to confirm.
If you don't see Duplicates, your iPhone hasn't found any yet. Apple says detection only runs while the iPhone is locked and connected to power, and can happen quickly or take up to a few days, depending on your library. Leave the phone charging overnight and look again.
What Apple's pages say about Merge
Apple's iPhone guide for iOS 16 says merging "combines the highest quality version and all of the relevant data across the duplicates" and keeps that one in your library, and that the other copies move to Recently Deleted (Apple, iOS 16). Apple's current page says only that Merge combines a set, so it's still worth a look at each set before you merge a big batch. Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days, and you can recover them in that time.
Step 2: Know what the album misses
The Duplicates album is built for copies of the same photo. Much of the clutter on a phone isn't that:
- Retakes: three smiles in a row, one slightly better.
- Bursts: a run of frames from one press of the shutter.
- Lookalikes: the same view with a small shift, a screenshot of a photo, or an edited copy next to the original.
Apple's duplicate pages describe duplicates only. Nothing there says it picks the sharpest or best of a group of similar shots, so those stay in your library until you go through them.
Bursts: keep the favourites by hand
Apple does give you a way to trim bursts yourself, but it's one burst at a time. Per Apple's Camera guide:
- Tap the Burst thumbnail in Photos, then tap Burst (with a number) at the top left.
- Gray dots below the thumbnails mark the suggested photos to keep.
- Tap the circle at the lower right of each photo you want to save as an individual photo, then confirm.
Apple's guide also says you can delete the whole burst from the same screen. This works well for a handful of bursts. It's slow across a library with hundreds.
Step 3: A tool for similar shots
An app can group retakes, lookalikes and bursts across the whole library and suggest one to keep. Check the price model before you install, as some apps charge by the week or year. Facts below are from each app's US App Store page on 8 Nov 2026.
| App | What it does | Price (US App Store, 8 Nov 2026) | Privacy, as the listing states |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doppelgone | Finds exact duplicates, similar shots and bursts, keeps the best shot and says why | Free to scan and for 200 clean-ups; Pro is one in-app purchase of $9.99, no subscription | Photos are analysed on the phone |
| CleanMy®Phone (MacPaw) | Finds duplicate and similar photos and helps you choose the best | Free download; monthly $7.99, yearly $36.99 or unlimited access $34.99 in-app | "doesn't save or upload your pictures anywhere" |
| Clever Cleaner (CleverFiles) | Groups duplicate and similar photos and marks the Best Shot | Free within daily limits; weekly $6.99 with a 3-day trial, or lifetime $39.99 | "processed locally" |
Clever Cleaner has generous free daily limits and a lifetime option, which is a good fit if you only need an occasional tidy-up. CleanMy®Phone covers more than photos, including contacts, videos and Live Photos.
Doppelgone on iPhone
Doppelgone for iPhone needs iOS 17 or newer and is on the App Store. It cleans the photos on the iPhone: camera bursts, retakes, the same picture saved twice from a chat, and everything iCloud Photos keeps on the iPhone.
- Every photo is analysed on the phone. Your photos never leave your device.
- In each set it keeps the best shot (eyes open, sharp, well lit) and says why.
- iOS asks you to confirm before anything moves, and removed photos go to Recently Deleted in Photos for 30 days.
- Favourites, Live Photos and videos are never touched.
- The scan is free. Pro is one in-app purchase with no subscription, and it covers that iPhone. See pricing.
Videos aren't part of clean-ups, so check large or repeated videos in Photos yourself.
If you use iCloud Photos
Apple's delete page says that deleting a photo on an iPhone removes it from your other devices where iCloud Photos is on and you're signed in to the same Apple Account. Deleted items sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days before being removed from the iPhone, iCloud and your other devices. That applies to merged copies, bursts you trim and anything an app moves, so look before you confirm. These guides cover the details:
