iPhone duplicate photo cleaners compared, without the subscription traps

Updated November 8, 2026 · 7 min read

The best place to start on an iPhone is Apple's own Duplicates album in Photos, which is free and needs nothing installed. It only handles duplicates, so retakes and burst frames usually need an app. If you add one, check the price model first: some iPhone cleaners charge weekly or yearly, and some free trials turn into paid plans if you don't cancel. Others are a one-off purchase or free. The table below uses each app's US App Store page, read on 8 November 2026.

Start with Apple's free Duplicates album

Apple says that from iOS 16 the Photos app detects duplicate photos and videos and puts them in a Duplicates album under Utilities. Detection runs while the iPhone is locked and charging, and Apple says it can take up to a few days. Apple's help describes duplicates only. It doesn't describe choosing between similar shots.

For the steps, see delete duplicate photos on iPhone. That guide also covers bursts and retakes by hand.

Six iPhone cleaners side by side

Prices are in US dollars, as shown on the US App Store on 8 November 2026. The privacy column repeats the App Store's own label, which the developer fills in and Apple doesn't verify.

App Price model What it keeps Privacy label (App Store) What's free
Clever Cleaner (CleverFiles) Weekly $6.99 with a 3-day trial, or lifetime $39.99. No yearly plan listed Marks the "Best Shot" in each group Data used to track you: Identifiers. Also linked to you: device ID, user ID, product interaction Free to use within daily limits; Swipe mode has no daily limit
CleanMy®Phone (MacPaw, formerly Gemini Photos) Monthly $7.99, yearly $36.99, or "Unlimited access" $34.99. Older Gemini Photos plans still appear Helps you choose the best photo and delete the rest Data used to track you: Identifiers, Usage Data Free download; the listing doesn't state limits
Remo Duplicate Photos Remover (Remo Software) Free. No in-app purchases listed One best copy kept automatically in each group Developer does not collect any data The listing states no limits
Duplicate Photos Fixer (Shrishail Rana) One-off paid app, $7.99. No in-app purchases listed Marks all copies but one in each group; you delete them Not linked to you: usage data and diagnostics Nothing: it is a paid download
Snapsift (Anh Phong) Monthly $4.99, annual $19.99 with a 7-day trial, or lifetime $39.99 Picks the sharpest, best-composed photo in each group Not linked to you: device ID and product interaction Scan the whole library free; delete up to 15 photos a month
Doppelgone One in-app purchase, Pro, $9.99. No subscription The best shot of each set (eyes open, sharp, well lit), and says why Not linked to you: usage data, diagnostics, purchase history, device ID. Your photos never leave your device. Scan everything free; clean up 200 photos in total

A few things the table can't show:

  • Clever Cleaner has free daily limits and a lifetime option, so it suits an occasional tidy-up.
  • CleanMy®Phone is the app Gemini Photos became, and it covers more than photos. See Doppelgone vs Gemini Photos.
  • Remo is free on the App Store page, with no purchases listed. We haven't tested it, and the listing describes no limits.
  • Duplicate Photos Fixer costs less than Doppelgone Pro, and lets you tune the matching (pixels, matching level, time difference, GPS).
  • Snapsift is new: the listing shows too few ratings for an overall score.
  • Doppelgone doesn't clean videos. Videos aren't part of its clean-ups.

What the subscription traps are

These are how Apple subscriptions work, not faults in one app. Check them before you tap a button.

  • Weekly plans. A weekly price looks small, but it repeats. At $6.99 a week, a plan left running for a full year adds up to about $363, which is nine times the $39.99 lifetime price on the same listing. That is simple arithmetic on the listed prices, not a claim about what anyone pays.
  • Trials that renew. Clever Cleaner's listing says the weekly plan is charged to your Apple ID at the end of the 3-day trial unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Snapsift's listing says its subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends. Apple's own page on cancelling says the same thing about trials: cancel at least 24 hours before they end.
  • Forfeited trial time. The CleanMy®Phone listing says any unused part of a free trial is lost if you buy an auto-renewing subscription during the trial.
  • Several plans in one listing. The CleanMy®Phone page lists nine in-app purchases, including older Gemini Photos plans at different prices. Read the plan name on the Apple payment sheet, not just the price.

How to stay in control

  1. Before you start a trial, read the plan name and price on Apple's payment sheet.
  2. If you don't want the paid plan, cancel in Settings (tap your name, then Subscriptions) well before the 24-hour mark.
  3. Prefer a one-off or lifetime option if you only need a single big clean-up.

Where Doppelgone fits

Doppelgone for iPhone cleans the photos on the iPhone: camera bursts, retakes, the same picture saved twice from a chat, and everything iCloud Photos keeps on the iPhone. Every photo is analysed on the phone. iOS asks you to confirm before anything moves, and removed photos go to Recently Deleted in Photos for 30 days. Favourites, Live Photos and videos are never touched.

Pro is one in-app purchase, $9.99 in the US App Store, with no subscription. It covers that iPhone. The free scan shows every duplicate, burst and lookalike and the space it takes. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best duplicate photo cleaner for iPhone?

Start with Apple's free Duplicates album, which handles exact duplicates. For similar shots and bursts, pick an app by its price model and privacy label rather than by its rating. Clever Cleaner, Remo and Doppelgone all have a free option.

Is there a Clever Cleaner alternative with no subscription?

Yes. Remo is listed as free with no in-app purchases, and Duplicate Photos Fixer is a one-off $7.99 app. Doppelgone Pro is a $9.99 in-app purchase with no subscription. Clever Cleaner also offers a lifetime option at $39.99.

Is there an iPhone photo cleaner that is really free?

Apple's Duplicates album is free. Among the apps, Remo's listing shows a price of free with no in-app purchases. Clever Cleaner and Doppelgone are free to start but have limits, and Snapsift lets you scan for free and delete 15 photos a month.

Will a free trial charge me automatically?

It can. Several listings say that the subscription starts when the trial ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before. You can cancel in Settings, under your name, then Subscriptions.

Do these apps upload my photos?

The listings say the photos are processed on the device, but the App Store privacy labels differ in what other data they collect. Read the label on the page. With Doppelgone, your photos never leave your device.

Does deleting a duplicate on my iPhone remove it from iCloud?

Apple's help says deleting a photo on your iPhone also deletes it from other devices where iCloud Photos is on and you're signed in to the same Apple Account. Deleted items are kept in Recently Deleted for 30 days. See iCloud Recently Deleted, explained.
