Phone storage full or cloud storage full? How to tell, and what to do for each

Updated November 8, 2026 · 6 min read

Phone storage and cloud storage are two separate meters. The phone's meter is the space on the device itself, and you read it in Settings. The cloud meter is your iCloud or Google account quota, and it is a different number with a different fix. If the message says "iPhone storage full", clear the phone. If it says "iCloud storage full" or "Google storage full", clear the cloud plan. Deleting true duplicates helps both, as long as your library syncs.

Check the phone's own storage

On iPhone

Apple says to open Settings, tap General, then tap iPhone Storage. The screen shows recommendations and a list of apps with the space each one uses. Tap Show All to see every recommendation, then tap Enable to turn one on or tap it to review what it would delete.

On Android

Google's Android help says to open Settings, tap Storage, then select a category to see what is using space. Some of Google's steps only work on Android 14 and up, so if a menu item is missing, check your Android version.

Check the cloud plan

iCloud

Every Apple Account includes 5 GB of iCloud storage for free. Apple's pricing page lists the paid plans above that. Photos you keep in iCloud Photos use both your iCloud storage and your device storage. See iCloud storage full: what to do first.

Google

Google says each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage, shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Google also says that new accounts created from 9 March 2026 begin with 5 GB and can unlock an extra 10 GB by verifying a phone number. Backed-up photos and videos count, and so do Gmail and Drive. If you go over, you can't back up new photos to Google Photos. See Google Photos storage full and Google One 15 GB full.

Which message are you seeing?

What you see Which meter Where to fix it
"iPhone Storage Full" on the phone Phone Settings, General, iPhone Storage
Low space on an Android phone Phone Settings, Storage
"iCloud storage is full" iCloud plan iCloud settings, then the guides above
Google says the account is full Google account Google storage manager

It is possible to have one full and the other empty. A phone can be full while the cloud has room, and a cloud plan can be full while the phone has plenty of space.

Fix the phone without touching the cloud

These two options clear the device and leave the cloud copy as it is.

Optimise iPhone Storage

With iCloud Photos on, Apple says iCloud keeps your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version, and the device keeps space-saving versions when it needs room. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, then under iPhone Storage choose Optimize Storage. Apple notes that on iOS 26 or earlier you choose Optimize Storage directly from the Photos screen. This frees phone space only. It does nothing for a full iCloud plan.

Free up space in Google Photos (Android)

Google's help says: open the Google Photos app, tap your profile photo or initial, then tap Free up space on this device. The app shows how much space you will free before you confirm. It removes only the copies on the phone. You can still manage the items in Google Photos. Photos less than 30 days old may stay on the device, and Google says to back up before you delete anything.

Fix the cloud plan

Optimising and freeing up space don't help here, because they don't change what is stored in the cloud. To lower the cloud number you have to delete things from the cloud: old device backups, large videos, Gmail attachments and duplicates. That is where free ways to clear iCloud storage and clearing Google storage without paying come in.

Why deleting duplicates can clear both

Both services say a deletion follows the library, so removing a real duplicate can lower both meters.

  • iCloud Photos: Apple says that when you delete photos or videos on one device, they are deleted everywhere you use iCloud Photos. They stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
  • Google Photos: Google says that deleting from the Google Photos app also deletes the same items from the device, and that backed-up content is deleted on all devices with backup turned on. If you want to delete only from Google Photos, turn off backup first.

That makes deletion powerful and not easily undone, so check each set before you remove it. Don't delete a photo to free phone space if you want to keep it in the cloud. Use Optimize Storage or Free up space for that.

Clearing duplicates

Start with the free options. On iPhone, Photos has a Duplicates album under Utilities. In Google Photos, a manual search works. They find exact copies, and they don't pick the best of several similar shots. Our guides cover duplicates on iPhone and duplicates on Android.

Doppelgone finds exact duplicates, similar shots and burst photos, keeps the best shot of each set and says why. You approve every clean-up, and removed photos wait 30 days. Your photos never leave your device.

  • iPhone app: cleans photos on the iPhone, including what iCloud Photos keeps there.
  • Android app: cleans photos stored on the phone. It doesn't clean the Google Photos cloud library.
  • Chrome extension: cleans Google Photos and iCloud Photos in the cloud.

Free scans everything and cleans up 200 photos. Pro is a one-off $9.99 payment with no subscription. Videos aren't part of clean-ups. Get the apps from the download page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my phone say storage is full when my photos are in the cloud?

The phone's storage and the cloud quota are separate. Photos can sit in the cloud while the phone is still full of originals, apps, messages and downloads. Check Settings, General, iPhone Storage on iPhone, or Settings, Storage on Android.

Does Optimise iPhone Storage free up iCloud space?

No. Apple says iCloud keeps the originals and the device keeps space-saving versions. It frees phone space only.

Does Free up space in Google Photos free my Google storage?

No. Google's help says it deletes the copies on your device only. The backed-up items stay in your Google Photos library and still count toward your account storage.

If I delete a photo on my phone, is it deleted from the cloud?

It depends on the setting. With iCloud Photos on, Apple says it is deleted everywhere you use iCloud Photos. With Google Photos backup on, Google says deleting in the app deletes it on all devices with backup on. Turn Google's backup off first if you only want to delete from Google Photos.

Do both meters ever fill together?

They can, because photos use both. Apple says iCloud Photos uses your iCloud storage and your device storage. Clearing real duplicates helps both, while Optimise and Free up space help the phone only.
